Purpose This position is based on special grant funding that ends in March 2010. Continued employment beyond March 2010 is based upon future availability of grant funding.
This position arises from a partnership between the Seattle University School of Law Access to Justice Institute (AtJI) and the Indian Institute for Estate Planning and Probate (IIEPP). The Attorney for Native American Projects will oversee projects that provide: 1) educational and co-curricular experiences for students in Indian Law; 2) opportunities for students to serve Native American communities; and 3) direct legal services to Native American communities.

Essential Job Functions Oversee the Study in Alaska summer program
* Manage the Alaska summer program, including the marketing and regional/national recruitment of students; recruitment of faculty; coordination of housing, classroom facilities and support services for faculty and students with our Alaska institutional partner; and the development of internship opportunities for student participants.
* May include the opportunity to teach a portion of a course.
Oversee Summer Intern program
* Coordinate placement of 2nd and 3rd year law students with tribal communities for 10-week period in the summer (which includes recruitment, selection, and training of summer interns).
* Contract negotiation and implementation with supervising legal services organizations.
* Coordinate with tribes for approval and support of students working in their communities.
* Compile data and write final report for IIEPP.
Oversee Estate Planning Legal Services Project
* Supervise paralegal who provides direct estate planning legal services to members of Colville and Spokane Tribes in Eastern Washington.
* Coordinate with paralegal to develop student volunteer opportunities, including land title records research, estate planning legal research and document drafting.
* Coordinate with paralegal to host student one-week immersion program (during school or summer breaks) on reservation community, which might involve onsite wills clinic and other experiences.
Oversee Native American Advocacy-Related Opportunities for Law Students
* Coordinate public interest opportunities for students with local tribes in Puget Sound area and collaborate with partners including leaders of Native American communities, King County Bar Association, civil legal services, Washington State Bar Association, and Native American Law Student Association.
* Serve as a point person for Native American Law Student Association and other student organizations interested in Native American advocacy.

Minimum Qualifications
J.D. degree and Washington Bar license required and a minimum of two years of experience in Federal Indian Law and experience working with Native American communities and their members. Candidate must have strong oral and written communication skills, be able to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and be an active team member of the AtJI staff.

Preferred Qualifications
Salary Hiring range of $50,000 to $55,000 based on skills and qualifications.
