Purpose The Access to Justice Institute (AtJI) team serves and empowers law students to engage in social justice wherever their careers may take them. By serving as a bridge between academia and action, the Associate Director (AD) joins the ATJI team in serving law students by mentoring, training, and connecting them to social justice opportunities that hone their legal skills and develop leadership. The AD collaborates with community and public interest partners so that students are involved with addressing unmet legal needs.

Essential Job Functions Serve as an integral part of the AtJI team, which develops and manages the student public interest opportunity infrastructure consisting of a pro bono/public interest opportunity system, a legal skills training and professionalism program, and a student leadership program.
* The pro bono/public interest opportunity system involves establishing and maintaining: a) a matching/placement system between students and providers where providers can easily recruit students for assistance and students can access opportunity information; b) a quality control system involving collecting and reviewing evaluations from students and supervisors and implementing improvements; and c) a system where students can keep track of their public interest work. Development and management of this system will involve working with databases and web-based systems and reporting.
* The professionalism program involves developing and offering trainings and seminars on: a) legal skills; b) anti-oppression; c) working in the equal justice community; and d) principles of pro bono.
* The student leadership program involves developing and implementing: a) a student leadership development course; b) a system for guiding student leaders working on social justice projects; and c) expansion of student leadership opportunities in the broader equal justice community.
* Serve as an integral part of the AtJI team, which develops public interest opportunities for students and supervises public interest law student projects.
* Collaborate with legal services providers, private firm pro bono counsel, community agencies, courts, government agencies, faculty, other Seattle University departments such as the Law Clinic (or any other entity that could provide a valuable public interest experience for law students) and identify, develop and oversee public interest opportunities for law students. These opportunities may range from simple placements with agencies to "in-house projects" that require more supervision and law school resources.
* Mentor and supervise students and student organizations that engage in public interest projects by providing technical support (e.g., legal expertise, ethics) and guidance (e.g., connections to community, collaboration skills), which will ensure quality legal assistance, a quality learning experience for students and continuity of ongoing projects and relationships with community partners.
Serve as an integral part of the AtJI team, which works closely with the Center for Professional Development (CPD) to serve students interested in public interest careers.
* Counsel students one-on-one and provide guidance and support in public interest career exploration.
* Organize and coordinate public interest career-oriented events with CPD.
Develop, coordinate and oversee social justice forums, trainings, and conferences:
* Coordinate and implement training programs involving development of legal skills, an understanding of social justice issues, public interest career exploration, and furthering of leadership development.
* Coordinate and implement programs for speaker series and panels, summits, conferences, and CLEs on emerging social justice issues and areas of law where there is a need for more pro bono involvement.

Minimum Qualifications The AD will collaborate with other lawyers and may at times supervise students performing legal work. The position requires a J.D. and bar certification (preferably Washington) with at least three years of legal experience or the equivalent. Candidates must also have a demonstrated commitment to social justice.
Candidates must be able to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and/or staff within the Law School. AtJI collaborates with the highly coordinated Alliance for Equal Justice and others, so candidates must also be able to work with partners outside of the law school.
Candidates must have excellent oral and written communication skills, and competence with Microsoft Office, Access Databases and Excel.
Candidates must show a demonstrated commitment to inclusion, diversity and cross-cultural competence as a justice imperative, and a commitment to the university's mission, vision, and values.
This position requires a criminal history background check.
Preferred Qualifications * Experience working at a law school or working with law students or student organizations.
* Systems-thinker, well-organized, able to work on multiple projects at the same time, and team-oriented.
* Creative, sensitive to social justice issues, enjoy working with a diverse community, and have a sense of humor.
* Technical experience with setting up online systems and databases and public relation skills with communications and media.
Salary Salary range is $47,000 to $54,000
